Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC who are of Igbo origins are divided over who becomes the next secretary to the government of the federation, SGF, as the fight for the post has split them into three bitterly divided camps.
Igbos Split Over Post Of Secretary Of The Federation
Under Nigeria’s complex zoning arrangement, the SGF has been zoned to the Igbo-speaking southeast geo-political zone and the race has begun to find a suitable candidate to fill the spot.
After several meeting held by the APC’s southeast caucus in Abuja it has been unable to reach an agreement on the nominees to be submitted for the positions of SGF and ministerial positions, Nigerian Newswatch can report.
Yesterday, the caucus met again at the Imo State governor’s lodge in Abuja at the instance of Governor Rochas Okorocha but the meeting ended in stalemate.
A party source at the meeting said they were unable to reach agreement because the three top contenders Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Chris Ngige and the current secretary to Imo State government, Professor Anthony Anwuka failed to yield ground for one another.
He added: “The leaders met to consider nominee for the post of the SGF which has been ceded to the zone. However, the meeting was divided on whether to forward one name or the three names but later resolved to send three names to the president-elect to decide whom to choose.”
Apparently, those who supported Dr Ngige were of the view that he has garnered vast experience both as a retired senior civil servant and former governor of Anambra State where his developmental impact was felt greatly by the people. They also said that Dr Ngige has knowledge of party administration and is very accessible and a friendly politician.
Before the meeting ended, the caucus resolved that henceforth, Dr Onu would be regarded as the APC south east zonal leader, while the governor of Imo state Chief Rochas Okorocha will be the zonal coordinator with Senator Ngige as the deputy zonal coordinator.
Also, the meeting nominated the party’s national vice chairman, southeast, Emma Eneukwu to serve as the zonal secretary.
It was learnt that meeting then resolved to meet again by next week after the peace committee headed by the former governor of Ekiti State, Olusegun Oni on the crisis in Enugu State chapter of the party concluded its assignment. It is not clear what the caucus decided on National Assembly positions that may come to the zone.
Meanwhile, following the intensifying contest for the Senate presidency, 64 ranking and new senators-elect met yesterday in Abuja.
