According to Premium Times, the accident occurred few kilometres away from the popular Danco filling station along the axis in the Obafemi Owode local government area of Ogun State.
A trailer had reportedly broken down by the roadside, leading to serious traffic congestion along the axis.
A tanker loaded with petrol drove against the traffic enroute Sagamu, its driver trying to maneuver his way through the traffic jam around the area.
The tanker eventually collided with another trailer laden with granite enroute Lagos from Abeokuta.
The resulting inferno led to the death of five people believed to be occupants of the trailers.
When contacted on the phone by Premium Times, the Public Relation Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the crash.
He explained that officers of the corps were on ground immediately to manage the traffic situation around the area. He added that the corpses have been deposited at a Sagamu morgue.
Lagos Ibadan expressway is a notoriously dangerous expressway due to the high rate of accidents on the road which is mostly caused by the bad road which is already under reconstruction.
The expressway used to field 4 lanes but it is now being reconstructed to accommodate 6 lanes. Construction on the road has been on-going for close to 5 years now.
